Phobia Treatments – Implosive Therapy
The techniques that are used during implosive therapy are very similar to those used during flooding therapy. Again, the therapist works on the feared situation through the imagination, in an environment that is comfortable and provides the phobic individual with a sense of security.
The difference with implosive therapy is that the therapist will use thoughts and descriptions from psychoanalytic theory to exaggerate the situation and encourage immense fear, in order to gain the maximum effect and consequently ease and eliminate the phobic’s symptoms.
During implosive therapy, the therapist will repeatedly run through the feared situation in vivid and descriptive detail. The idea of this type of treatment is that the individual experiences reduced levels of anxiety each time the scene is re-enacted in their imagination. This type of therapy is used to treat anxiety disorders and to install positivity.
Phobia Treatments – Exposure Therapy
Exposure therapy uses a mixture of behavior therapies such as; flooding, implosive, systematic desensitization and cognitive modification. The idea of exposure therapy is that the phobic individual is slowly introduced to their fears in a controlled, safe and comfortable environment.
During the initial therapy sessions, the therapist may show the individual images of their feared situation or object. They will be gradually exposed to their fears at a pace that suit them.
Phobia Treatments – Modeling, also known as social learning and observational learning
This type of therapy requires the phobic individual to observe another person carrying out their feared situation. For example, an individual suffering from a fear of bridges might be asked to watch another person, usually of the same gender and similar age, to successfully walk across a bridge. The aim is to reduce the individual’s levels of anxiety and dread.
