Individuals who experience social phobia feel intense, extreme and exaggerated fear of social situations. The avoidance of social situations may be caused by a more specific fear, such as; fears of speaking, eating, rejection, embarrassment. There are various reasons why an individual experiences phobic reactions. Social phobia often develops over a period of months or years. It often starts in early adulthood, or between the ages of 15 and 30 years.
